ARTIST STATEMENT
As the artist behind the Golden Era Exhibition, I am thrilled to present a series of works that blend elements of Mythological Greek and Japanese aesthetics with the rich and vibrant Art Nouveau style. At the heart of this collection are various anthropomorphic Tui's, a nod to the unique and iconic avian species native to Aotearoa.
My intention with these works is to create a sense of both timelessness and whimsy, by fusing together elements from different cultures and periods in time. The use of gold-leaf paint adds a touch of the opulent and the grandiose, while the starkly isolated anthropomorphic subjects inject a sense of childlike playfulness and humour.
The figures themselves are inspired by traditional Greek and Japanese sculptures and figures, which I have reimagined and updated to fit within a contemporary context. The use of vibrant colours and bold, dramatic shapes is a hallmark of the Art Nouveau style, which emphasises the divine beauty and importance of nature.
Ultimately, my hope is that these works will draw in and invite viewers to experience a sense of wonder and delight, as they explore the intersection of different cultural and artistic traditions. By bringing together seemingly disparate elements in unexpected ways, I hope to encourage viewers to consider new, wonder-filled possibilities and expand their creative horizons.
